How Martha Stewart's DIY Faux Chalk Paint Is Taking Over Fancy, fun paint is all the rage right now—and no wonder: chalky faux paint has recently been spotted on everything from furniture and decor items (sofas, bed frames) to clothing (tights and knits) and accessories (jewelry). It even looks great when applied to wood. But while some DIY faux paint makers are charging about $30 an ounce, Martha Stewart's version is somewhat more affordable at $11.95 an ounce. And it has a major advantage: "You can mix it like paint," says Andrea Dobbs, lead product developer for Martha Stewart. So ease your way into the trend with this make-ahead recipe for chalky paint, which can also be used on many other materials (sofas, bed frames), clothing (tights and knits) and accessories (jewelry). 1. To make the paint, mix the food coloring with 1 cup of water in a separate bowl; then stir in 1 tablespoon frying oil. 2. Lay the fabric on a flat surface, leaving space on one side of the fabric so you can paint without getting back-up paint on it. Start at the top left corner and paint one-inch wide stripes in alternating colors of your choice, with each color no more than two inches long. 3. Set aside to dry for at least 30 minutes. 4. Trim any rough edges with pinking shears, if needed, then use a glue gun to attach tiny pieces of Scotch tape or fabric trim along parts that are not covered by paint (noticeably, these areas are white in the image below). 5. cfa1e77820
